World premiere by Ballet Nacional de España on the 26th of September, 2003, at the Orchard Hall (Tokio, Japan).
The taranto derives from the taranta, a profound form of cante de las minas (song of the mines).
The taranta is a free-form style of singing, meaning that it does not follow a fixed sequence of bars in an ordered rhythmic structure. The melismas of the taranta are adapted to four-beat rhythmic patterns, giving rise to the taranto and making it suitable for dance. From the 20th century onwards, it thus became a form of baile hondo within the flamenco repertoire. It is always accompanied by guitar en singing.
Antonio Canales uses this choreography to explore the passions of a man and a woman. The strength of a passion that drags them together and the conflict of the same passion that forces them apart.
Once again flamenco is used to interpret the language of life.
