Biography

Saray Muñoz (Madrid, 1975) is the daughter of Tina and the niece of Carmela, internationally known as Las Grecas. They were the first Roma women to fuse flamenco and rock, achieving enormous success with the song Te estoy amando locamente, which remained at the top of the Spanish charts for a considerable period of time. On her third album, her mother dedicated a song to her entitled Mi niña Saray.

When Saray was 19, her mother Tina passed away. At the age of 22, she was offered the opportunity to revive the duo Las Grecas with her aunt, signing a contract that took them on tour throughout Spain. At 25, she decided to leave the group and embark on a solo career. She began performing at various Madrid tablaos, including Casa Patas, Al-Andalus, Corral de la Pacheca and Torres Bermejas, among others.

In 2005, she joined Joaquín Cortés’s company for the productions Mi soledad and Calé, touring extensively around the world. In 2007, she began working with Antonio Canales’s company on the production Los Grandes. She has also worked with a wide range of artists and companies, including Rafael Amargo, Ara Malikian, Jorge Pardo, Tim Ries, Raimundo Amador, Concha Buika, María Juncal, Lola Greco, Carmela Greco and José Greco.

In August 2009, she joined Sara Baras’s company, taking part in productions including Juana la loca, Carmen and Esencia, and touring extensively throughout Spain and France. Saray is a flamenco singer and composer. She has written lyrics for most of the productions in which she has collaborated. She continues to tour as a solo artist in the United States and France, while collaborating with different artists and embarking on new projects.

Since 2012, she has been a member of the Ballet Nacional de España’s musical ensemble as a flamenco singer.
