The Ballet Nacional de España performed Electra from 28th to 30th December at the Teatro Real in Madrid before a full house. Choreographer Antonio Ruz, with the collaboration of Olga Pericet, brought together contemporary dance and flamenco to transport Greek tragedy to the Spanish rural world that captivated Lorca.
Ever since UNESCO declared flamenco an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity at a conference held in Nairobi (Kenya) in 2010, International Flamenco Day has been celebrated around the world on 16th November. At the Ballet Nacional de España, we commemorate it every day, but in 2019 we did so to the rhythm of the ‘alboreá’ from the ballet Electra, which we performed that day in Murcia.
On 9th November, the Ballet Nacional de España took part in a charity gala held at the Gran Teatro de Córdoba to mark the 50th anniversary of the career of former Spanish National Ballet dancer and choreographer Javier Latorre.
The BNE performed Electra at the Teatro Cervantes on 22nd and 23rd November with the special collaboration as guest artists of Sandra Carrasco and Antonio Najarro. This choreography was one of the high points of the renewed Danza Málaga series.
To avenge someone who committed another crime out of revenge. Blood begets blood, and that is the curse. The Ballet Nacional de España, directed by Rubén Olmo, will perform Electra, a version of the Greek myth inspired by the Spanish rural imagination, on 22nd and 23rd November at the Teatro Cervantes in Málaga.
Ties of blood can bring tragedy to a family when mixed with revenge. Electra could not forget her father’s murder and turned into a myth. In Murcia, on 16th November The Ballet Nacional de España starts its first season under the directorship of Rubén Olmo with this choreography by Antonio Ruz in collaboration with Olga Pericet.
Despite being one of the great Spanish dance masters, the Córdoba dancer and choreographer Mario Maya had not been included in the Ballet Nacional de España until now.
The Ballet Nacional de España to perform Electra in Murcia, Málaga, and Madrid in the upcoming tours till the end of the year. It will also take part in the tribute to dancer and choreographer Javier Latorre in Córdoba.
Directed by Rubén Olmo, with the artistic assistance of Miguel Ángel Corbacho, the BNE cast is made up of 42 dancers, two cantaores [singers] and six musicians, in addition to six dance masters.
