World premiere by the Ballet Nacional de España on 18th September 1996 at the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid (Spain). Revived on 8th December 2018 at the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid to mark the company’s 40th anniversary.
Our remembered Mariemma divided Spanish dance in four categories: escuela bolera, stylised dance, flamenco, and folklore. Of the four, the latter is currently the least favoured, in part due to a “modern” idea that wrongly connects our folklore with Franco’s regime, with its Coros and Danzas and its Sección Femenina. But the rich variety of Spanish folklore is not only the heart of our classical music and dance, but it is also an artistic expression of the first order when done carefully. In Romance Juanjo Linares, one of the major guardians of Spanish folklore in the past decades; and Paco Azorín, the top jota dancer, showed the best side of this branch of our dance. The Ballet Nacional de España presents Galicia, a powerful duo accompanied by a corps de ballet, a stylisation of the dance of this northwest region of Spain.
Great wars are proclaimed
Across both land and sea,
And Count Flores is appointed
Captain General.
The young Countess weeps,
Unable to find consolation;
They have only just been married,
And now they must part.
Drawing on the 14th-century Romance de la Condesita, by an unknown author, the creators take us through the different dances of our land, guided by a woman who never ceases in her search for the man she loves.
