Choreographers

  • Antonio Najarro

This piece was created especially by Antonio Najarro for dancer Sergio Bernal to celebrate the company’s 40th anniversary. The solo is set to music by Dorantes, one of the leading figures in flamenco piano. The Greek myth of Icarus, the man who escaped from Crete with his father, Daedalus, using wings made of wax that they had built themselves, provides the starting point for this choreography. Their fates were very different: despite Daedalus’s warnings, Icarus flew too close to the sun, which melted his wings, causing him to fall into the sea, while his father landed safely in Sicily.
