World premiere by the Ballet Nacional de España on 27th December 1986 at the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid (Spain).
A beautiful Miller’s Wife lives happily with her husband, the Miller, a hard-working man with a cheerful disposition. One day, the Corregidor passes by the mill with his entire guard and is captivated by the Miller’s Wife’s beauty. Realising this, she decides to play along with the intrigue. The Corregidor returns in an attempt to win her over, but she deceives him, dancing seductively while mocking him. The Miller catches them together and, as a warning, threatens the Corregidor, who leaves humiliated but furious, vowing revenge. One festive evening, the villagers dance and enjoy themselves in the square. The Miller performs his farruca for everyone, but the celebrations are interrupted by the arrival of Garduña at the head of the guard. They arrest the Miller on false charges, leaving the way clear for their master, the Corregidor. He surprises the Miller’s Wife and tries to seduce her, but she angrily defends herself and throws a bucket of water over him, leaving him cold and drenched. The Miller, having escaped from Garduña and his guards, returns to the mill. When he sees the Corregidor’s clothes, he assumes that the Corregidor has achieved his aim and swears to take revenge in the same way. Meanwhile, the Corregidor, now wearing the dry clothes he has borrowed from the Miller, is mistaken for him and arrested by the guard in front of the entire village. Dressed in the Corregidor’s clothes, the Miller attempts to seduce the Corregidora in revenge. However, his wife, the Miller’s Wife, discovers him and, stripping away his disguise, publicly humiliates the Corregidora for having gone along with the deception. The Corregidor is chased and beaten by the entire village until the guards manage to rescue him at the last moment from a possible lynching.
