The curtain rises when they are returning from the Doña Bernarda´s husband burial. She retains the control and a sober rule over her noble, but ruined, house. She lives as a widow, devoted to glorifyining her rank, keeping her five daughters apart from the suitors that could spoil it. Her daughters are condemned to celibacy, the songs of the men who pass under their windows are unanswered. Excepting the youngest one, who feels an irresistible impulse and goes to meet one of that men… But, in front of Love is Honor and Authority.
