World premiere by Ballet Nacional de España on the 12th of July, 1985, Roman Theatre, (Spoleto, Italy), during the XXVIII Festival dei Due Mundi.
Regarding the lyrical and theatrical tradition of Spain, Doña Francisquita is a free adaptation for ballet based on the renown zarzuela by Amadeo Vives. It reflects the customs and habits of a funny and relaxed post-Goyesque Madrid, where carnival and celebration fill the night. In the right situation for deceitful and misleading love affairs, masks and disguises, Alberto Lorca locates his choreography on the streets and squares of the Court, telling the love story of Fernando and Francisquita; the first one, infatuated with the beautiful Beltrana; the second one, suffering the harassment from Don Matías, Fernando´s father.
Cardona, Fernando´s friend, will make the couple come to their senses, causing a happy end in which, besides Fernando and Francisquita, the own Cardona and Beltrana and also Don Matías and Doña Francisca – Francisquita´s mother- will entwine. And so the ballet ends, with a superb fandango that blends the colorful costumes with the art of a dance so beautifully Spanish.
