World premiere by the Ballet Nacional de España on 13th December 1985 at the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid (Spain).
An emblematic piece by Enrique Granados (with orchestration by Ernesto Halffter), from his Doce danzas españolas, is the base for this solo created by Victoria Eugenia, “Betty”, one of the most endearing figures of our dance, which she knows, loves, and is able to convey. Danza IX –the score is called “Mazurca” or “Romántica”– is a classic work, elegant, fine, and graceful; a piece in which a graceful and musical dancer can shine and where the castanets feature prominently.
“A solo set to one of the Spanish Dances by our Granados. It is, as Helen C. Branderbury said, ‘like fire on ice, a piece in which the soloist seemed to fill the entire stage to overflowing. At every moment, she gave the impression of having something very important to say with every part of her body. Light and dramatic, moving from one emotion to another, she was mesmerising.’”
