World premiere by the Ballet Español de Pilar López on 12th April 1952 at the Teatro Barcelona in Barcelona, Spain. Premiered by the Ballet Nacional de España on 13th June 1979 at the Teatro Principal in Valencia, Spain. Revived in 2001.
I understand the first movement as joyful, youthful, playful and romantic music, in which the dancers play as they dance and dance as they play, with touches of Spain’s rich folklore.
The second movement is night. In the magnificent gardens of Aranjuez, four young men are drawn to the night, symbolised by a woman. The night disappears and four maidens emerge, but they are unable to win them over. The men leave in search of the night.
The third movement is day: a court dance at the Royal Palace of Aranjuez.
