This year, we dedicate our celebration to one of the essential figures in our country's musical history: Miguel de Molina. On the occasion of the exhibition dedicated to the "King of Copla," organised by Casa de Velázquez, we were able to learn more about this unique artist and pay tribute to a legacy that goes far.
This tribute to Miguel de Molina is a stage creation by Ballet Nacional de España, directed by Rubén Olmo, created specially for this event. It consists of two choreographies from the company's repertoire, Martinete and Caracoles, and a third, set to the music of Molina's immortal copla, Ojos Verdes. For the third choreography, the dancers were accompanied by Martirio's voice and Raúl Rodríguez's guitar, which helped bring the performance to a moving close.
Miguel de Molina (Málaga, 1908 - Buenos Aires, 1993) was a versatile performer who not only designed and hand-made the avant-garde costumes for his performances, but also choreographed, designed the sets, directed the scenes, and even arranged the musical numbers. In fact, he often accompanied his performances with a small orchestra – unusually for the copla genre at the time – made up of a string quartet (two violins, a cello and double bass), an oboe, a flute, a clarinet, a saxophone, and a percussion section, according to documents in his personal archive and researcher Elsa Calero’s research. Occasionally, a piano also joined this ensemble.
His understanding of the stage, his musical arrangements and his own artistic genius contributed to the revival of a genre that until then had been exclusively female, leaving us with a legacy of performances that are now part of Spain's sentimental history.
