Ballet Nacional de España will perform two emblematic choreographies by Granero and a new creation in tribute to the Maestro.
On April 25th and 26th, Teatro Mira in Pozuelo de Alarcón will host two performances with which the Ballet Nacional de España seeks to celebrate the legacy of José Granero, one of the most important figures in the history of dance in Spain.
Over these two days, the BNE will dedicate to him a carefully curated program made up of two of the most emblematic choreographies by the artist known as the Maestro, and a new creation that takes up his legacy and represents it through a 21st-century lens.
José Granero (1936–2006), a Spanish dancer and choreographer of Argentine origin, is the great reference point for the new choreographic composition of Spanish dance, which he endowed with a narrative capacity and theatricality that have kept his creations alive to this day and have served as a guide and path for new creators.
Keeping Granero’s legacy alive
The undisputed protagonist of the program to be performed at Teatro Mira will be Medea, one of the finest theatrical flamenco ballets. Its dramaturgy, written by Miguel Narros based on Seneca’s tragedy, the music of Manolo Sanlúcar and the choreography of José Granero come together in a heartrending, seamless production: a story of love, betrayal and revenge whose artistic value remains undiminished to this day.
This iconic work, premiered on July 13th, 1984, at Madrid’s Teatro de la Zarzuela, is possibly the most performed and reinterpreted choreographic work in the history of Spanish dance.
The performances of Medea will feature dancer Inmaculada Salomón in the leading role, with music by Manolo Sanlúcar and set design by Andrea D’Odorico.
For its part, the forms, movements and lines of Bolero caress the notes composed by Ravel, combining the purest classical Spanish style with the essence of flamenco dance. The set, inspired by art nouveau, with mirrors that multiply the beautiful silhouettes wrapped in silk in striking shades, contrasts with the austerity of leather in the male costume.
This work, premiered on October 9th, 1987, at the Grand Théâtre de Bordeaux in France, will feature performances by Miriam Mendoza on April 25th, Débora Martínez on April 26th, and Carlos Sánchez, with music by Maurice Ravel.
The program is completed by a new creation, Arrieiro, which looks to Granero’s legacy in order to reinterpret it and, through the language of the 21st century, keep it alive and affirm its relevance today. This choreography by Eduardo Martínez is about the muleteer, an eternal traveller who follows the roads, leaving the trace of his passage behind. He carries not only loads, but also stories, aromas and memories, absorbing the tradition and idiosyncrasy of every place he crosses. In that coming and going, in that communion with the road and the land, he finds the true meaning of his existence. Arrieiro premiered on October 17th, 2025, at Madrid’s Teatro Real.
