Generaciones, an evolution in Spanish dance at the Festival de Granada

Generaciones presents one of the Spanish classical works most beloved by dancers: Alberto Lorca’s Ritmos. The programme is completed by Estampas Flamencas and two solos that showcase the renewal of Spanish dance: Pastorela by Antonio Ruz and Jacaranda by Rubén Olmo.

Following its première at the Teatros del Canal in 2022, Generaciones takes the stage outside Madrid. This time, at the Festival de Granada, on Saturday 8 June at the Teatro del Generalife.

This programme is marked by a pas de deux between tradition and renewal in Spanish dance. With Generaciones, director Rubén Olmo emphasises the need to recover the classics without losing sight of new trends, through a mixed programme that draws on the tradition of Spanish dance and also reflects the evolution of stagecraft through several generations of creators. It brings together one of the most popular Spanish classics among dancers, Alberto Lorca’s Ritmos, with a score by José Nieto, and Estampas Flamencas by Rubén Olmo and Miguel Ángel Corbacho. Alberto Lorca's work, premiered in 1983, is a visual spectacle in five movements dedicated to Encarnación López, "La Argentinita", while Estampas Flamencas was inspired by the style, aesthetics and character of Antonio Ruiz Soler. Martinete, Zorongo, Seguiriya, Taranto, and Caracoles. A sweep through early song, dance and guitar that explores the flamenco palos typical of Antonio's work.

The programme is completed by Pastorela, a solo by Antonio Ruz and music by Manuel Blasco Nebra, a contemporary work with its own personality that renews contemporary and Spanish dance, opening it up to other styles. A solo in which dancer Inmaculada Salomón navigates, without prejudice, between the bolero school, stylised dance and contemporary dance, combining Goyaesque cadences and deconstructions with evolutions of contemporary dance.

Following its première at Madrid's Teatros de Canal in 2022 and its subsequent run in Terrassa and Granada, Generaciones will return to Madrid from July 17th to 28th at Teatro de la Zarzuela.
