On May 15th and 16th, Carlos III University of Madrid will host Manuel de Falla’s emblematic work in its Auditorium, located on the Leganés Campus, at 8:00 p.m.
Manuel de Falla’s El amor brujo will take center stage on May 15th and 16th. The venue will be Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, which will host this iconic work in its Auditorium on the Leganés Campus at 8:00 p.m.
The UC3M Orchestra, conducted by Manuel Coves, will perform a version featuring, in addition to cantaora Esperanza Fernández and narrator Ana Hernández Sanchiz, the Ballet Nacional de España’s principal dancers: Inmaculada Salomón, Débora Martínez, Miriam Mendoza, Eduardo Martínez and Matías López.
Spells, songs, dances, love… Rubén Olmo, director of the Ballet Nacional de España, recreates El amor brujo, giving this Manuel de Falla classic a more contemporary and personal vision.
Halfway between monodrama, ballet and concert suite, El amor brujo is one of the most emblematic scores in the Spanish orchestral repertoire, with its “Ritual Fire Dance” as its most popular piece. Rewritten on numerous occasions between 1915 and 1925 in different formats, the work remains permanently open to creation and reinvention, as well as to collaboration with artists with flamenco roots.
“This new ballet is a metaphor for love,” explains Rubén Olmo, who has used only the characters from Falla’s famous choreography in his creation in order to speak about the freedom of love and its different ways of loving. As he explains, “love cannot be controlled. Love must be left free, allowed to flow. Its freedom must be felt. It is a nod to the freedom of love. Everything remains where it has to be: in free and true love.”
This project is a joint initiative between the Carlos III University of Madrid Orchestra and the Spanish National Ballet. Previously, the BNE director had danced and choreographed some of the numbers from this work, but he had never staged it in full.
