Ballet Nacional de España closes the 2022–2023 season at Veranos de la Villa

Ballet Nacional de España closes the 2022–2023 season with its appearance at Veranos de la Villa 2023, a tour that chooses the Condeduque Contemporary Culture Centre as the venue for the world premiere of Hijo del alba, a solo inspired by Picasso.

The triple program, which can be enjoyed from August 2^nd to 5^th, joins the celebration of Picasso Year, marking the 50th anniversary of the artist’s death. Estampas flamencas, Hijo del alba and El sombrero de tres picos are the works chosen to captivate Madrid summer audiences.

Rubén Olmo and Miguel Ángel Corbacho have created four pieces for Estampas flamencas, the first work of the evening, drawing inspiration from the aesthetics, style and character of Antonio Ruiz Soler. Their choreographies explore traditional flamenco from its origins, both in terms of costume and music, and, through the flamenco forms most commonly found in Antonio’s works — martinete, zorongo, seguiriya and caracoles — offer an overview of singing and dance through a more contemporary choreography.

The program continues with a new work: the premiere of Hijo del alba, whose world premiere will take place on August 2^nd as part of Veranos de la Villa. Created by Diana Noriega, Miguel Corbacho and Rubén Olmo, director of the Ballet Nacional de España, this choreography pays tribute to Pablo Picasso’s relationship with the world of dance in the year marking the 50th anniversary of his death. Picasso’s harlequin comes to life in this solo performed by Rubén Olmo, representing the birth of a new life: man and artist. Feelings, differences and contradictions merge into a single character.

El sombrero de tres picos, a classic work from our repertoire, closes the program with choreography by Antonio Ruiz Soler, accompanying Manuel de Falla’s score, performed on this occasion by the Orquesta de la Comunidad de Madrid. The work recovers the costume and set designs created by Pablo Picasso for Léonide Massine’s version, premiered in London in 1919.
